Rome orders €45bn in cuts and taxes

The Italian government has approved an extensive emergency package worth €45bn in cuts and higher taxes over the next two years. The move is aimed at meeting the European Central Bank’s request to increase efforts to balance Italy’s budget by 2013.
The measures, passed by an emergency cabinet meeting on Friday, will total €20bn ($28.5bn) in 2012 and €25.5bn in 2013, and will “be in great part new”, said Giulio Tremonti, the finance minister. This means they will be in addition to the €47.8bn set by a budget approved in mid-July.
Archaeologists find Apollo mosaic in Rome

Archaeologists have unearthed a 2,000-year-old mosaic in Rome depicting the Greek god Apollo, naked except for a colorful mantle over a shoulder, surrounded by his muses in a cellar once used as a park tool shed near the Colosseum, officials said Friday.
“This is a very important discovery. The mosaic is in perfect condition and it can be dated exactly to between 64 and 109 A.D.,” Umberto Broccoli, head of the culture department of the Rome city council, told reporters on a visit.

The company opened its first Gap and Banana Republic stores in Milan in November 2010. Within a few months, the two stores combined were among the top performing stores in the company’s global fleet. Last year, Gap brand also made its products available to European customers online by launching a dedicated e-commerce site ( www.gap.eu ). Today, this site services 21 European countries, including Italy.
Shorebirds Drop Series Finale with Rome

Rome Braves catcher Ryan Delgado held onto the throw from right field David Rohm after Adam Gaylord plowed into him and the R-Braves held on for an 8-7 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (45—53, 10-18) on Friday night at State Mutual Stadium. The Shorebirds have dropped six games in a row.
The Shorebirds only lead of the game came after the top of the first inning. Ty Kelly ignited a rally with a two out single. Then, Jeremy Nowak doubled to plate Kelly from first to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. Michael Ohlman followed with a single into center field to give the ‘Birds a 2-0 edge.

After months of strenuous efforts to contain the effects of the debt crises in the smallest economies of the eurozone periphery, it looked as if the preferred German version of a new Greek rescue – involving private creditors as well as public cash – was close to agreement at the weekend.
State officials use Rome hospital for data experiment

Hospitals and doctors’ offices are often the scene of experiments, but Georgia physicians are launching a different kind of test, one with electronic medical records.
The Department of Community Health is investing $1.7 million of federal stimulus funds in the Georgia Cancer Coalition’s attempt to develop a network in which cancer patients, their doctors and the city’s two hospitals all share electronic copies of medical records.
Similar health-information exchanges are being tried by medical providers in Savannah, Evans and Atlanta as well as other parts of the country. In March, the department received a $13 million federal grant to establish a statewide network for providers to exchange patient information.
Elisabetta Canalis: Roaming in Rome

The beautiful brunette looked to be doing pretty well, considering her recent breakup with George Clooney, as she partook in the gourmet cuisine at Assunta Madre restaurant.
As previously reported by GossipCenter, Elisabetta and George’s split was initiated by Canalis’ comment about possible marriage during a recent interview.
Torres marks return to Rome amid tears

Dara Torres closed a circle of sorts, fighting off tears after swimming in her first major meet since her coach died.
The 44-year-old American swimming great competed at the Seven Hills meet Friday, 10 weeks after Michael Lohberg died from a rare blood disorder.
“This is a meet when I came back in 2007 it was my first meet back with Michael, and in ’09 (when Rome hosted the world championships) it was my last meet with him, so it’s kind of a sentimental reason to come back here,” Torres said.
